To be eligible to study in Canada:

  • You should have been accepted by a school, college, university or other educational institute in Canada.
  • You need to give relevant proof that you have enough money to pay your:
    o Tuition fees;
    o Living expenses for yourself and family member who has come with you to Canada;
    o Return transportation for yourself and family member along with you;
  • You must have a clear criminal record You may have to provide a police certificate.
  • A good health report
  • A valid Passport
  • A form or proof for the immigration officer that you will leave Canada once your stay duration is over.
    Working on and off Campus or as an Intern
    full-time students at a public post-secondary institution such as a college, university or a private post-secondary institution can work on campus without a work permit but you must have a valid study permit and a SIN (Social Insurance number). Working off campus requires a work permit and you can work up to 20 hours per week during the term and work full-time during your holidays. Some academic programs require that you gain work experience as part of the curriculum. In this case, you will need to apply for a work permit as well as a study permit. To qualify, you will need to make sure that your intended employment is an essential part of your study program and you must obtain a certified letter from a responsible academic official of the institution.

Help Your Spouse Find a Job While You Study

Canada has also made it possible to bring your spouse along for your study journey. If you are a full-time student with a valid study permit, your partner will have access to an open work permit, and can move to Canada without a job offer. They will have the opportunity to apply for a job in Canada and work for as long as the course is running.

Work in Canada after Graduation: Qualify for Canadian permanent residence

Gaining work experience in Canada after graduation is a great way to become a Canadian permanent resident. Qualified students on a Canada study visa or permit may receive Canadian permanent residence under the following programs without leaving Canada.

Post Graduation Work Permit

The Post Graduation Work Permit gives international students the chance to work after graduation by granting a Canada work permit for up to three years and is exempt from Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) requirements.

Requirements:

  • Studied full time in Canada in a program of at least 8 months duration
  • Graduated from a public post-secondary institution, a private post-secondary institution, or a private institution authorized by provincial statute to confer degrees
  • Submit an application for a work permit within 90 days after receiving written confirmation of completing a study program
  • Received notification of eligibility to obtain a degree, diploma or certificate
  • Possess a valid Canada study visa or Canada study permit

Canadian Experience Class

This federal program allows international students who have graduated from a participating Canadian post-secondary institution to get Canadian permanent residence without leaving Canada.

Requirements:

  • Graduated from a Canadian post-secondary institution with at least 1 year of full-time (or equivalent) skilled work experience in Canada.
  • Possess 12 months of continuous work experience in Canada under a work visa or study visa
  • Submit an application while working in Canada – or – within 1 year after leaving Canada
  • Possess a valid language assessment (from a recognized third party agency approved by Citizenship and Immigration Canada)
  • Intend to reside outside the province of Quebec

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

This program allows international students who graduated from a participating Canadian post-secondary institution to receive nomination by a Canadian province or territory Canadian permanent residence without leaving Canada.

Requirements:

  • Intend to reside in the nominating province or territory
  • Submit an application directly to the province or territory that will assess the provincial nomination program PNP application
  • Submit a separate application to Citizenship and Immigration Canada for Canadian permanent residence
  • Pass a medical examination
  • Pass a security and criminal background check
